The Israeli Prime Minister calls for an evacuation plan for the city of Rafah, before a new offensive aimed “at destroying Hamas”. More than 1.2 million Palestinians are refugees there.

The declaration panics the international community. Made before the war cabinet, it was repeated publicly by Benjamin Netanyahu. “I asked our armed forces to prepare to operate in Rafah against the last strongholds of Hamas. The army will allow the population to leave the combat zone”, did he declare. In Rafah (Gaza Strip), 1.2 million Gazans are crowded together.

US still does not call for ceasefire in Gaza

Displaced people who fled the North and Center due to the fighting, and thought they were safe in the city. “They told us that here was a place where we could be safe, and now they say that they are going to come here too. We no longer know what to do”deplores a man. “We are afraid, where are we going to go?”, a woman worries for her part. The town of Rafah, located in the far south of Gaza, is a dead end. Egypt has reinforced its border there, and does not want the Palestinians.

The Israeli army could ask the populations to move again towards the Center and the North. For the UN, an assault on Gaza would worsen “the tragedy”. However, the United States is still not calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Last night, around ten Palestinian civilians were killed in strikes in Rafah.
