Near Perpignan, the playful and artisanal music of Pascal Comelade, between rock and Catalan tradition

Pascal Comelade, known for his eclectic musical creations, held a concert in the village of Passa (Pyrénées-Orientales) with the Catalan orchestra La Cobla Sant Jordi.

It is in the small village of Passa, near Perpignan, that the Catalan musician Pascal Comelade put down his piano for a concert at nightfall, in the enchanting setting of the Monastir del Camp. The pianist is accompanied by La Cobla Sant Jordi, an emblematic Catalan orchestra, but also other less classical musicians, from rock or jazz.

In this simple setting, without artifice, Pascal Comelade, accompanied by his joyful troupe, offers heady and playful music. Forty years of career and an inimitable style, the musician likes to step aside. He enjoys mixing rock, experimental and artisanal music, also using toy instruments, as in his latest album released last September, The Nonsense of Rhythm.

Me, what interests me is the raw, radical, primitive aspect of the practice of music. And I think there’s a direct delight that is felt by the people who kindly come to us.“, explains Pascal Comelade.

A unique energy

For the village of Passa, this concert is a real event as the public appearances of Pascal Comelade are few. “When you know a little about Pascal’s music, and see how he is placed, not only in the department, but also in Catalonia or Japan, where he is almost better known than in Passa. It’s a huge event“, enthuses Patrick Bellegarde, the mayor of Passa.

When funny toy instruments mingle with traditional brass instruments, Pascal Comelade creates a one-time-use alchemy and contagious energy. “There is a lot of emotion in the music and in the arrangement. And me, I am also sensitive to the Catalan orchestra because I heard that when I was a child“, rejoices one of the spectators at the end of the concert.
