Only 54 short minutes were enough for the athlete of the maple leaf to defeat the holder of the 332e world rank.

She had all six aces in the match and won 24 of the 26 points disputed on her first serve.

The 96e player in the world made five breaks in six attempts and saved the only break point offered to Papadakis.

Fernandez’s task in the second round will be much higher, as she will face Muscovite Anna Blinkova, who occupies the 39e level of the professional circuit.

Elsewhere, Ontario’s Bianca Andreescu – fifth seed and 51e of the WTA – will start the competition later in the day by crossing swords with the Briton Sonay Kartal (264e).
