Sri Lankan military doctors have removed the world’s largest and heaviest kidney stone, a kidney stone, from a retired soldier, the army said on Wednesday.

The 62-year-old former noncommissioned officer had a kidney stone removed that weighed 801 grams, more than five times the weight of an average male kidney, the military said.
It was 13.37 centimeters long, while the average kidney is only between 10 and 12 centimeters.
“The removal of the world’s largest and heaviest kidney stone through surgery took place on June 1 at the Colombo Military Hospital,” the military said in a statement.
The authorities’ announcement comes after the recognition of this record by the Guinness Book of World Records.
The previous record — 620 grams — for a kidney stone was recorded in Pakistan in 2008, according to Guinness.
“The most important thing for us is that the kidney is functioning normally despite this stone,” said military surgeon K. Sutharshan.
The retired serviceman explained to a local television channel that he had been suffering from abdominal pain since 2020 and the medication he had been prescribed had had no effect.
Kidney stones are stones formed by mineral salts that accumulate in the kidney, an organ that filters the blood.
