how the executive wants to cut the rug from under the right and the RN

The Minister of Public Accounts, Gabriel Attal therefore unveils this morning a plan to tackle social fraud… The political editorial by Renaud Dély.

Allowances, Vitale cards, retirees abroad… The Minister Delegate for Public Accounts Gabriel Attal unveiled on May 30, 2023 a vast plan to fight against social fraud which should make it possible to save money and double the adjustments to ‘by 2027. He does so three weeks after presenting another plan, this one to fight against tax evasion.

It is therefore the second blade of a strategy on which the executive is betting a lot politically. First, because it is a question of resuscitating the famous “at the same time”. At the beginning of May, by targeting tax evasion, the favorite hunting ground of the left, Gabriel Attal displayed the objective of making “pay what they owe the ultra-rich” and he underlined that the tax evasion of “powerful” East “unforgivable“. This time, by targeting social fraud, Bercy is attacking a fad from the right.

“Pragmatism” rather “stigma”

The government does this in the name of the “pragmatism”, a way of exhuming another precept of the original macronism. Pragmatism, efficiency, rather than ideological postures. Thus, Bercy refutes the “stigma” by the right and the extreme right of the fraud attributed to foreigners. Of course, certain measures may appeal to this fringe of opinion, such as the prohibition on paying benefits into non-European bank accounts or the extension to nine months of the period of residence necessary for a foreign national in a regular receives allowances.

But beyond these political nods, the executive above all displays the objective of tackling fraud, in terms of work, health benefits or allowances, which are for the most part under attack. initiative of employers or health professionals. These frauds affect the daily life of the French. Tackling it is therefore another way to win back the middle classes, the object of all the attention of Emmanuel Macron. Because what has been fueling the civic crisis for years is not so much the fact that successive rulers are considered too right or too left. It’s that they are judged impotent at best, useless at worst.

For the government, punishing the fraudsters, tracking down the vanished billions, is not only embodying order and law, it is a question of survival. Because it demonstrates the usefulness of public action and the effectiveness of this social model of which the French are so proud.
