After beating cancer, this White Sox gunner is back in major league baseball

Chicago White Sox late game specialist Liam Hendriks returned to work Monday night after beating cancer.

The 34-year-old gunner advanced to the eighth inning of a game against the Los Angeles Angels to a standing ovation from the Illinois crowd. The day before, the White Sox released a video where several of Hendriks’ teammates can be seen paying tribute to him.

He stayed on the mound for one inning, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk.

The pitcher missed the start of the current season with stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He has been in remission since April 20.

The Aussie returned to baseball playing six games for Charlotte’s AAA squad. He also recently took part in three White Sox batting practices.

Former Toronto Blue Jays (2014-2015), Hendriks has made 75 saves in the last two campaigns, 38 in 2021 and 37 more the following year. Previously, he wore the uniform of the Oakland Athletics (2016 to 2020), the Kansas City Royals (2014) and the Minnesota Twins (2011 to 2013).
