Mooseheads: The best line in the QMJHL in more than 15 years

The Halifax Mooseheads can count on three players who have already amassed more than 100 points in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) this season, a first since 2005-2006.

Last season, Île Bizard native Jordan Dumais held the Nova Scotia team’s offense at arm’s length. He had 109 points in 68 games, 21 points more than his most productive teammate, Elliot Desnoyers.

It’s a whole different story in 2022-2023. Thanks to the acquisitions of Josh Lawrence, from the Blainvile-Boisbriand Armada, and Alexandre Doucet, from the Val-d’Or Foreurs, three of the four top scorers in the QMJHL play with the Mooseheads.

Dumais, a third-round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets, leads the league with 122 points, including 48 goals, in 58 games. Doucet, 21, leads the league with 52 goals and has 102 points. Finally, Lawrence, who is also in his last year of eligibility on the Quebec circuit, collected 43 goals and 100 points.

The only other QMJHL player to reach that milestone is St. Louis Blues prospect Zachary Bolduc of the Quebec Remparts.

Hot on the heels of the Red Devils for first place in the Eastern Conference, the Mooseheads have a lucky hand with their three-headed monster. In their last game, against the Moncton Wildcats, they employed Doucet, Dumais and Lawrence on three different units.

You have to go back to the 2005-2006 campaign to see another trio of equally dominant forwards in the QMJHL. With the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, former Montreal Canadiens member David Desharnais had totaled 118 points in 63 games…a good harvest for his team’s third place. Stanislav Lascek (135 points) and Maxime Boisclair (130 points) had done better.
