A 33-year-old man with a heavy criminal past, Simon Trudel-Jobin, faces seven charges, including attempted murder and aggravated assault, after he tried to suffocate a woman towards whom he had already shown violence in 2021.
The Quebec police (SPVQ) arrested the accused shortly before 6 a.m. Monday morning in a residence in L’Ancienne-Lorette, on the outskirts of the capital. His alleged victim, despite his numerous injuries, had managed to flee to a “safe place” to ask to call for help.
The appearance of Simon Trudel-Jobin took place the same day at the Quebec courthouse. The prosecutor in the file, Me Laura Dufour-Plamondon, specifies that the individual faces nine counts, including attempted murder, threats and breach of condition. The accused, she specifies, would have tried in particular to asphyxiate his alleged victim.
The scene took place in a marital context, according to the SPVQ, which specifies that the injuries suffered by the victim do not give rise to fear for his life.
The accused’s legal setbacks date back to 2013. A native of Rouyn-Noranda, Mr. Trudel-Jobin pleaded guilty at the time to impaired driving and was fined $1,000. Four years later, he once again confessed his guilt, this time in a case of obstructing a peace officer.
In 2019, the accused pleaded guilty, this time to charges of fraud, breaking and entering for the purpose of committing an indictable offense and assault. He was sentenced to six months in prison followed by two years probation.
A few months apart in 2021, Simon Trudel-Jobin was the subject of two complaints, from two different women, for assault and assault with a weapon. The court granted him conditional release.
