On Wednesday, October 19, the government used constitutional article 49.3 to pass the 2023 budget. Journalist Christophe Gascard takes stock of the situation.
After the use of 49.3 by the government, Wednesday, October 19, to vote on the 2023 budget, the opposition denounces a passage in force. “Élisabeth Borne explained that in responsibility, the government must give the country a budget, hence the use of 49.3”, explains Christophe Gascard, live from the National Assembly. A hundred amendments were nevertheless retained, including some from the opposition, to make concessions.
“Among them, a boost on corporate taxation to satisfy the right and an amendment on frying oil used as fuel has also been retained, as a gesture to Europe-Ecologie-les-Verts”, continues the journalist. However, the Nupes has already filed a motion of censure, while the RN has until Thursday evening to do so. “But neither party will vote for the other’s motion. The government therefore has no risk of being overthrown”concludes Christophe Gascard.
