For son

Q: Our thrifty 19-year-old son wants to buy a car that he can keep for several years. Since there are few offers on the used side, he is willing to spend more on a new car, up to $22,000. Is it a good choice ? What are the most interesting models in terms of quality-price? — Maryse R.

A: Unfortunately, “cheap” vehicles are no longer on the streets. For the sum indicated and considering its desire to keep the car for a long time, we suggest you take a look at the Kia Rio, a subcompact (one of the few) sold for less than $20,000. This is arguably one of the best deals on the market right now for a vehicle that is versatile enough and guaranteed for a period of five years.

Do we keep it?

Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio 2019

Q: I have a 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio that I have one year left on the lease. It will have around 65,000 km in September 2023 and I had 96,000 km available. My question: is it a good idea to buy it in September 2023 at the end of my lease? The residual value is $29,500. – Norman L.

A: You omit to say if the vehicle satisfies you (reliability, quality and cost of maintenance) and if it still meets your needs. If so, why not buy it?

Wait or not?

Audi Q4 e-tron

Q: Our 2019 Audi Q5 Progressive shows 45,000 km on its odometer. The lease ends in August 2023 with a residual of $26,000 and the vehicle will then have approximately 64,000 km. What will be its resale value in 2023? We are interested in an Audi Q4 e, do government discounts apply? Would it be wiser to refinance the Q5 residual and wait? What is your assessment of the Audi Q 4 e and what would be your other suggestions for electric SUVs? — Diane R.

A: For you, the residual value of your vehicle will be $26,000. However, its market value is likely to be higher considering that the current situation (supply) is likely to continue until the end of 2023. In the case of the Q4 e-tron, the Canadian management of Audi has reviewed the price ( and the standard endowment too) down to qualify for government rebates. A full test of this model will be released in the coming weeks. If you like the Q4 e-tron, you might also be interested in Volkswagen’s ID.4. These two vehicles have a lot in common.

For a smooth transition

Toyota Corolla hybrid

Q: Hello, we want to buy a small compact in the near future. We want a gasoline-powered car because the electric ones are too expensive for us. We are retired, but need enough space to put two child seats, because our grandchildren accompany us from time to time. What is the best buy for a compact car? — Monica N.

A: You could consider a compact hybrid, right? This vehicle will allow you to quietly familiarize yourself with the energy transition. Among your choices, we suggest the Toyota Corolla Hybrid or the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. The 100% petrol versions of these two vehicles are also recommended.
