The Iranian selection joined the action to the word. Before the friendly match against Senegal, Tuesday, September 27 in Mödling (Austria), Iranian players symbolically protested against the repression that is raging in their country. At the time of the hymns, they appeared on the lawn with a black parka to hide their jersey, devoid of Iranian flag and coat of arms.

This gesture comes at a dramatic time in Iran. Since the death of Mahsa Amini, two weeks earlier, following her arrest by the morality police for not having worn the veil “correctly”, the uprising of the population is gaining momentum in the country. In response, murderous repression rages: the NGO Iran Human Rights (IHR) counts “at least 76 dead” whose “six wives and four children”.

On Monday, several players from the Iran team had openly expressed their support for the popular movement. The most famous of them, Bayer Leverkusen striker Sardar Azmoun, posted a message on his Instagram account: The [punition] ultimate goal is to be expelled from the national team, which is a small price to pay for even a single lock of hair from an Iranian womanhe had written. It will never be erased from our consciousness. I’m not afraid of being ousted. Shame on you for killing the people so easily and long live the women of Iran.

Sardar Azmoun also scored the only Iranian goal of the evening (1-1) but the most important was not played on the lawn of Mödling while the Iranian population took to the streets on Tuesday for the 12th consecutive night.
