In Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes), Vincent de Stefano, a port agent specializing in the environment, is a somewhat unusual fisherman. Every morning, he lifts his nets in the port, and never returns empty-handed. He is not looking for fish, but floating waste. For the past year, the port has been equipped with two robots, moored at strategic points. They suck up whatever floats around them. An electric pump creates a current, which drives the waste into the collecting net.
These robots attract the curiosity of walkers. Today is a cleaning operation. “You have to regularly take it out of the water, so as to clean the engine, the pump, the floats“, explains Vincent de Stefano. The port also has a third robot, used especially for hydrocarbons. Every month, nearly two cubic meters of waste are collected on the body of water. 90% would arrive from the land.
