(Quebec) The executive of the Liberal Party of Quebec (PLQ) in the riding of Maurice-Richard, represented by Marie Montpetit, resigned en bloc to protest against the way in which the MP was treated by the party leadership and its leader Dominique Anglade.
Made up of ten people, the executive of Maurice-Richard sent a letter to the PLQ at the beginning of the week to indicate its disagreement and announce his resignation.
For the party, this Montreal constituency is therefore an orphan, a few weeks before the party convention, which will be held in Quebec at the end of November.
The gesture of the liberal activists of Maurice-Richard follows the recent decision of the leader, Dominique Anglade, to exclude from the liberal caucus the deputy Marie Montpetit, who is the subject of allegations and a complaint of psychological harassment of the share of former employees.
In their letter, the members of the executive believe that their deputy was not entitled to fair treatment, and could not benefit from the principle of the presumption of innocence.
They argue that Mme Montpetit is entitled to a neutral and impartial investigation process, saying he also fears that the exclusion of Mr.me Montpetit of the liberal ranks weighs down the party’s chances of retaining the riding during the next election campaign in 2022.
Maurice-Richard is not one of the liberal strongholds. In 2018, the PLQ won with a slim majority of 530 votes and 29% support. Québec solidaire (QS) followed closely with 25% of the votes and the Coalition d’avenir Québec (CAQ), ranked third with 19% of the votes.
