The penalty fell. Actor Will Smith has been banned from attending the Oscars for 10 years for slapping Chris Rock on stage, the Academy announced on Friday (April 8). The Academy’s board of directors, which includes stars like Steven Spielberg and Whoopi Goldberg, began disciplinary proceedings against the actor last week.
Will Smith, 53, has resigned from the Academy last week. “My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and inexcusable”wrote the actor, five days after going on stage to slap comedian Chris Rock who had just made a joke about his wife’s cropped hair.
The Best Actor Award for his role in “The Williams Method”
Jada Pinkett Smith went public a few years ago with alopecia, a condition that causes severe hair loss. A few tens of minutes after the slap, Will Smith returned to the Oscars stage to receive the best actor award for his role in The Williams Method.
He had made no act of contrition at the time, contenting himself with castigating “people who disrespect you” and say that “love makes you do crazy things”.
