Mr Legault,
I’m 17, and not so long ago I realized how unfair the world we live in can be. “Fortunately, I have the chance to live in Quebec. That’s what I thought to myself… But today, I think I’ve changed my mind.
On Tuesday, January 11, during a press briefing, you mentioned the possibility of imposing “a payable health contribution” on adults who refuse to be vaccinated. It is certain that you have good reason to believe that this would be an effective solution. In theory, the costs associated with the hospitalization of unvaccinated adults are very real. But I believe that we should think beyond these considerations.
Having grown up with a sense of security due to free health care in my province, I find it hard to imagine that some people will have to pay “a significant amount” for a service that I took for granted, simply because that they have different values from yours.
This approach seems insane to me since it is a matter of discrimination. In addition to building a wall between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated, it creates a gap between the different social classes. In my opinion, it is incorrect to involve money in an ethical decision such as the choice to be vaccinated or not. By the same token, a person who does not have the means to pay the decided sum would have to give up his convictions, while a more fortunate individual could afford not to be vaccinated. You know, Mr. Legault, money does not solve all the problems… I would even go so far as to say that it sometimes creates them.
But hey, as you said so well in your last Facebook post: “We’re there. This is the Quebec we live in in 2022. After all, who am I to talk? It’s not me who makes the decisions, so I just have to shut up until I’m 18 and can vote!
