PLQ leadership race | A first MP supports Charles Milliard

Mille-Îles MP Virginie Dufour becomes the first elected member of the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) caucus to support the candidacy of Charles Milliard in the race for leadership of the political party.

Virginie Dufour appeared alongside the former president of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of Quebec on Wednesday, in the shadow of the National Assembly, to announce her support.

“What struck me about Charles was his attentive listening and his ability to build bridges with Quebecers from all walks of life. He takes the time to understand people’s concerns, without imposing ready-made solutions,” she explains in a press release issued for the occasion.

“Laval is on the path to reconquest of the Liberal Party of Quebec. I am honored to receive the support of Virginie Dufour, a woman whose commitment to housing, the environment and sustainable development is recognized not only in Laval, but within the confines of the National Assembly,” comments for his part Charles Milliard.

Elected during the last general election in 2022, Virginie Dufour becomes the first member of the PLQ caucus to support the candidacy of Charles Milliard, whose campaign is already co-chaired by former ministers Lucie Charlebois and Jean D’Amour.

Spokesperson for the official opposition on the environment and the fight against climate change and on housing, Virginie notably held the position of municipal councilor in Laval.

Other Liberal MPs have given their support to some of Charles Milliard’s opponents so far. This is particularly the case of the MP for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Désirée McGraw, who supports former federal minister Pablo Rodriguez and the MP for Chomedey, Sona Lakhoyan Olivier, who lined up behind her colleague, the member for Marguerite-Bourgeoys, Frédéric Beauchemin.

Among the candidates announced for the PLQ leadership race, former Montreal mayor Denis Coderre and tax lawyer from Matane Marc Bélanger do not yet have official support from a member of the caucus.

The PLQ leadership race will begin on January 13. Four debates are planned for the spring and the new leader must be elected on June 14 at a rally in Quebec.
