Review of the album “A Change of Pace”, Greg Amirault Trio

A pillar of the Quebec jazz scene, guitarist, composer and teacher, Greg Amirault has called together the trio with which he officiates during jam sessions weekly to record A Change of Pacea fourth album as band leaderwhich opens with joy and swing by That’s a Factrereading of the standard theme You Don’t Know What Love Is. The guitarist’s expert and smooth playing, the conversations he has with Andre Vedady on bass (on the elegant title track, for example) and drummer André White (remarkable playing on Ancestral Roots !) are exciting, under the auspices of an album all cool. This is evidenced by his version of the classic. Kiss Me Muchomore complex than it seems at first listen: this familiar little tune takes unexpected harmonic and melodic detours under Amirault’s skillful fingers, transforming the Mexican classic out of the blue. However, we will prefer the compositions of the native Acadian, who pays homage to his roots on the splendid Walk to the Butte.
