In Turkey, 64 million voters are called to ballot on Sunday 14 May. For this presidential election, the country is particularly divided. After 20 years in power, President Erdoğan is not guaranteed to be re-elected.

The ballot promises to be very close. The outgoing president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, 69, in power for 20 years, showed his serenity on the morning of Sunday May 14 by depositing his ballot in the ballot box. “I hope that after the count we will have a profitable future for our country, and for Turkish democracy”, he confided. In a country where fraud is commonplace, thousands of observers from both sides are deployed in polling stations.

Two company choices

The opponent, Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, 74, is at the head of a coalition of six parties, from the nationalist right to the liberal centre-left. After his vote, he reaffirmed his leitmotif. “We are nostalgic for democracy. We need to find ourselves and get closer”, did he declare. Two choices of society for the Turks therefore, with Erdoğan the power of a single man set up as a system, or with Kemal the collegial leadership and the restoration of the rule of law. The opponent of the president, by denouncing corruption in particular, has won over Turkish youth, among others.
