(Los Angeles) Worn by the American star Zendaya, the film Challengers rose to the top of the North American box office in its first weekend of release, according to estimates on Sunday from the specialist firm Exhibitor Relations.
The 27-year-old actress and singer plays a tennis prodigy at the center of a love triangle in this subversive drama, in which rivalry, friendship and love intertwine.
“It’s a very good launch for a romantic and sports drama,” notes analyst David. A. Gross, emphasizing the weight of Zendaya and the talent of Italian director Luca Guadagnino, who made himself known internationally with Call Me By Your Name.
The film, which depicts the ultra-competitive world of tennis, grossed $15 million in its first weekend of release.
“It’s the right subject, with the right director, who features the right star at the right time,” assures Mr. Gross.
In second position in the ranking is Usung Hero, a religious film, grossed $7.8 million in its first weekend of release. It tells the story, inspired by true events, of a family of musicians who move from Australia to the United States.
The feature film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire follows, with 7.2 million dollars and thus remains on the podium. The film sees the immense reptile and the famous gorilla this time fighting side by side.
The dystopia Civil War falls to fourth place, after being in the lead for two weeks, with $7 million in revenue. The film tells the story of the descent into hell of the United States, divided in the near future by a civil war.
In fifth place comes the horror film Abigail with $5.3 million. In this humorous film, criminals kidnap the daughter of a member of the underworld, before realizing that she is a vampire and that she is going to make them pay for her kidnapping.
