Created on June 21, 1982, the Fête de la Musique was a daring bet of the Minister of Culture at the time, Jack Lang. Forty years later, this musical rendezvous is a great success.
For 40 years, the French have been able to take to the streets to sing, play, dance, on the occasion of the Fête de la Musique. On June 21, 1982, to celebrate the first day of summer, a wind of freedom blew over the country. The Minister of Culture at the time, Jack Lang, is at the origin of this festival. “What was unimaginable was that a state decided to party”explains Jean-Michel Djian, author of “June 21: the musical coronation of the French” (Ed. Threshold – 2011).
During the first edition, the Fête de la Musique was only supposed to last half an hour but ended up going all night. Since then, the monuments, the bridges, the seaside are invested with musicians. The stars have joined the fans and some concerts have marked, like Pink Floyd at Versailles in 1988, or Jacques Higelin at the Louvre in 1989. Forty after its creation, the Fête de la Musique is celebrated in 120 countries.
