30 months in prison for two days of pimping

An unscrupulous pimp who abused the trust of a destitute young woman by prostituting her for two days has received a harsh sentence of 30 months in prison and a series of conditions to be respected for three years.

” [Vos crimes] didn’t last long, but it had an impact on the victim. And there, all these conditions [qui sont imposées]these are consequences for you, ”said Judge Hélène Morin to Jerry Joinvil, Monday, at the Montreal courthouse.

Looking sheepish, the 27-year-old pimp replied that he understood the lesson for his crime committed last December against a young woman “in a difficult situation” who had appealed for help on Instagram. Joinvil then approached her, quickly offering to go live with him.

The woman accepted and the same evening, she found herself at Joinvil’s.

“Quickly, the subject of money is discussed, indicates the summary of the facts. The accused then tells her that she can either commit fraud or become a prostitute. »

two customers

Completely helpless, the victim chooses the second option. In two days, she had two clients, earning her $800. Joinvil kept most of the amount, indicating to the woman that henceforth she was going to work for him, and that she had to bring in $1,000 daily.

Except that the victim refused, which led to an altercation that degenerated.

“The defendant took what appears to be a gun and placed it to the victim’s head, telling him not to call the police,” the summary of facts states, adding that he then pushed her on the bed.

The woman was finally able to leave the premises. And since her phone had been confiscated by the pimp, she went to a convenience store, from where she called the police.

Joinvil was arrested soon after. Rather than go to trial, he ultimately opted to plead guilty to pimping, assault with a weapon, and robbery, among other charges.

Consequences

But even if it allowed the victim not to testify, it did not earn him leniency from the court. Because at the suggestion of the parties, judge Hélène Morin sentenced him to 30 months in prison, followed by 3 years probation. During this period, his access to social networks will be limited and he will also be prohibited from being in places where there is commodification of sexual services.

Nor will he be able to hang out with criminalized people.

“It is a severe sentence, which hopes to be a deterrent for all those who would like to do the same”, declared Me Alexandre Gautier de la Couronne, at the end of the hearing.
