The two leaders had a first telephone exchange since Mr. Zelensky’s visit to Canadian soil on September 22. This diplomatic visit, during which Canada announced a new tranche of $650 million in aid to Ukraine, however turned into a fiasco when the President of Parliament, Anthony Rota, made Yaroslav Kunka, a former soldier, applaud Nazi of Ukrainian origin.

The two leaders avoided mentioning this oddity in their respective reports of their phone call.

According to Mr. Zelensky, above all, it was about the agreements reached during his visit to Canada, “particularly the development of our hydroelectric production and the finalization of the Holodomor genocide museum.”

“President Zelenskyy thanked Prime Minister Trudeau and all Canadians for their hospitality during his recent visit to Canada,” assured the Prime Minister’s office, which suggested that the two leaders discussed “aid military, financial and humanitarian contribution by Canada.

MM Trudeau and Zelensky also discussed the situation in Israel and the Gaza Strip. The Ukrainian president also “thanked Justin who stands ready to help us evacuate our citizens from Gaza”, an element which the Prime Minister’s office did not mention.
