After months of threats and intimidation by far-right groups, the mayor of Saint-Brévin-les-Pins, Yannick Morez, has resigned from his post. The mayor, whose house was partially burnt down, claims to have felt little support from the state.

This is news that surprised everyone in this seaside resort of 15,000 inhabitants. The mayor of Saint-Brévin-les-Pins (Loire-Atlantique), resigned yesterday from his post. “I find it deplorable that, because of the stupidity of some, this calls into question a democratically elected vote”, explains a resident. Since the state’s decision to open a reception center for asylum seekers, the town has become the target of far-right groups, which has generated tensions in the city and threats against the mayor. Last March, his home was burned down.

Indignation of almost the entire political class

Yannick Morez says he alerted the prefecture, without obtaining any response or protection. Remarks contradicted by the prefect of Loire Atlantique, who explains that he took “measures in particular on the home”. Since his resignation, the former mayor has received support. He was applauded in the National Assembly, and Emmanuel Macron supported him on Twitter. Elisabeth Borne promises, for her part, to strengthen the protection of elected officials. The resigning mayor must be received at Matignon next week.
