Yaël Braun-Pivet, first woman elected president of the National Assembly

She is the first woman to hold this position under the Fifth Republic. The deputy of the presidential majority Yaël Braun-Pivet was elected, Tuesday, June 28, president of the National Assembly. The Assembly “has the face of France” and “the French enjoin us to work together, to debate rather than fight”said the elected 51-year-old in her first speech from the perch, in front of her husband and five children in the gallery. “We will have to be in action, in peaceful action. And the role of the President of the National Assembly is also to maintain a climate of peaceful debate between each other”she then insisted to the press.

Ephemeral Minister for Overseas Territories and President of the Law Commission at the Palais-Bourbon under the previous legislature, the one who was still a novice in 2017 was elected in the second round by a vote of deputies by 242 votes, i.e. an absolute majority of votes cast that was necessary.

“Finally! For the first time in its history, the National Assembly will be chaired by a woman”congratulated Olivier Véran on Twitter, even before the official announcement of the result.

Facing Yaël Braun-Pivet, Fatiha Keloua-Hachi (Nupes-PS) won 144 votes, Annie Genevard (LR) 60 and Nathalie Bassire (Liberties group, independents, overseas, territories), 16.

Sébastien Chenu (RN), who was a candidate in the first round, withdrew for the second. “We are unable to muster a majority” and “will not take part in the vote”he said, thus allowing Yaël Braun-Pivet to avoid a third round to be elected, by a simple relative majority.

Yael Braun Pivet becomes the 15th president of the Assembly under the Fifth Republic, succeeding Richard Ferrand (LREM), defeated in the second round of the legislative elections.
