Brazilian justice on Tuesday ordered the lifting of the blocking of the bank accounts and assets of social network X in Brazil, after the platform agreed to pay more than 5 million US dollars in fines.
The decision by Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes paves the way for a rapid reactivation of American billionaire Elon Musk’s social network in Brazil, where he has been suspended since August 31 for refusing to delete several accounts accused of spreading false news .
In the new decision, Mr. de Moraes asked the Central Bank of Brazil to “unfreeze” the bank accounts and financial assets of fines indicated”.
The company’s finances in Brazil were frozen by court order at the end of August, just before the platform became inaccessible in the country.
According to the ruling, be removed from the blockage imposed by Alexandre de Moraes himself.
Before its suspension, some 22 million people used the social network in Brazil, the largest market in Latin America.
But on September 18, the social network became widely accessible again in the country thanks to a technical maneuver which allowed it to circumvent the blockage, before being taken offline again the next day.
The company has since begun to comply with Mr. de Moraes’ requests to resume operations.
Alexandre de Moraes and Elon Musk have been engaged in a fierce battle for months over their conception of freedom of expression.
For Mr. Musk, the judge is an “evil dictator.”
The magistrate thinks that the social network allows the dissemination of information that harms democracy.
