He finished second in his heat on Tuesday night.

The 30-year-old clocked 20.10 seconds, finishing behind 18-year-old American Erriyon Knighton, a stunning 19.77.

Overall, Brown’s time was the eighth fastest in the semifinals. Six runners covered the distance in less than 20 seconds.

Jerome Blake of Burnaby, BC, finished 11e and did not advance to Thursday’s final with a time of 20.29.

American Noah Lyles, bronze medalist in Tokyo, led in 19.62, followed by Knighton.

The third fastest time (19.84) was achieved by American Kenneth Bednarek, silver medalist in Tokyo.

Canadian and Olympic champion Andre De Grasse is not taking part in the event. He’s not fully recovered after contracting COVID-19 about a month ago.

De Grasse was eliminated in the 100 meters semi-finals on Saturday.

Dos Santos crowned champion

In the 400m hurdles, Brazilian Alison dos Santos was crowned world champion with the third best time of all time, 46 sec 29, with reigning Olympic champion Karsten Warholm only finishing seventh.

Dos Santos beat two Americans, Rai Benjamin (4689) and Khallifah Rosser (4739). Warholm, also outgoing double world champion and world record holder (4594) but whose preparation was turned upside down by a muscle injury, only completed his race in 48 sec 42.
