Radio-Canada apologized on Wednesday for the repeated use of the n-word in one of its radio columns from two years ago, which earned it a recent reprimand from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission ( CRTC). The public broadcaster, however, intends to appeal this decision, judging that it is an “interference in the journalistic work in the country”.
Radio-Canada notably considers that “the CRTC exceeded its powers with regard to the independence of the public broadcaster. Its decision of June 29 represents a threat because the Council is trying to give itself the power to compromise journalistic independence”.
“The use of this word is hurtful to many within our audiences and our teams, and we are deeply sorry,” however, acknowledges the state corporation in a statement released Wednesday.
