Woman dies after car falls on the edge of Niagara Falls

(New York) A woman in her 60s was found dead Wednesday in her car that fell in the Niagara River separating the United States from Canada, a few meters from the famous falls, after a spectacular rescue operation by helicopter, local police said.

The police intervened Wednesday at midday, in the city of Niagara Falls (upstate New York), due to the presence of a black car almost submerged in the bed of the Niagara River, at the edge falls of the same name.

An emergency operation is then initiated by the state emergency services, until the water level is lowered thanks to the dam on the river, explained the New York State Park Police in a statement.

Drones and a helicopter make it possible to locate “a body on the driver’s seat”, according to the same source.

Stunning television footage showed a coastguard hanging from the rope of a helicopter, attempting to stabilize above the car despite dire, windy and snowy weather conditions, just 50 meters from the famous falls of Niagara.

“A woman over 60, from western New York State, was found” but “declared dead on the spot,” police said in their statement.

The investigation is to determine the cause of death as well as how the car fell into the river, between a highway bridge and a pedestrian bridge, in the town of Niagara Falls.
