Winter red spell: heat records could be shattered

After the sudden drop in the mercury at the start of the weekend, a certain mild spell sets in in Quebec on Sunday, except in the northwest of the province where a sudden cooling is expected at the end of the day.

Rising temperatures should be felt in the south of the province from Sunday until at least Wednesday, according to Environment Canada forecasts.

In the regions of Montreal, Outaouais, Estrie and Montérégie, average temperatures between 0°C and 2°C are expected during the day on Sunday, accompanied by partial sunshine.

The mercury will continue to rise slowly at the start of the week, reaching up to 16°C in places on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Here are the temperatures forecast for February 28, 2024 in Montreal, Sherbrooke, Quebec, Bagotville and Val-d’Or, according to Environment Canada:

This same mild spell at the start of the week until Wednesday should be felt throughout Quebec, but especially in the south of the province, said Environment Canada meteorologist Marianne Peltier-Champigny.

“This weather system is expected to be followed by a cold front as early as Thursday,” she added.

In the regions of Quebec, Charlevoix, Bas-Saint-Laurent and Gaspésie, Sunday promises to be slightly cooler than in the south of the province, with average temperatures forecast between -1°C and -4°C.

“A vigorous cold front will cross northwestern Quebec late in the day and in the evening on Sunday,” said Environment Canada. This warning is in effect, in particular, for Abitibi and Chibougamau, where “a rapid drop in temperatures is expected while the mercury will drop by approximately 10 to 12 degrees Celsius in a few hours.” And this, in barely three hours, said Mme Peltier-Champigny.

In addition, heavy snow showers could form, thus considerably reducing visibility, the meteorologist warned.
