“Why, when it works so well, do you want to rush, brutalize, I don’t see the point”comments François Hollande at the Mouv’ microphone on Wednesday May 29 about the government’s project to merge public broadcasting. “That there are connections, that there are convergences, that there are people working together, that has always seemed necessary to me. But why make a law? Why come back to the ORTF at the moment where on the contrary we need diversity?” asks the former President of the Republic.

“If I did not pass a law on audiovisual while I was President of the Republic, it is because there were reasons”, he assures. “It should not be seen as the interest of staff versus what would be a presentation of the general interest. (…) I am one of the listeners, it can improve, but why change? I don’t I’m not even sure that the public service’s competitors are happy about it. So when no one is happy, why shake things up?analyzes the former president.

The exam of the public broadcasting reform bill was rejected in the National Assembly. This bill provoked an outcry from employees who went on strike on May 23 and 24. The unions oppose the merger desired by the government.
