Live from Russia, France Télévisions correspondent Luc Lacroix talks about Vladimir Poutine’s absence from the G20, scheduled for Indonesia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not travel to the G20 in Indonesia. The summit is to be held next week in Bali. Reason officially invoked a busy schedule. But it is also a question of avoiding a possible confrontation with the United States and its allies, in particular the Europeans, about the war in Ukraine. This summit could have been the first meeting between Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin since the war in Ukraine began.

In addition to the potential humiliations that this absence will allow him to avoid, “Vladimir Poutine does not have much to offer and does not have much to gain either during this summit”, explains journalist Luc Lacroix. And to add: “Peace with Ukraine still seems a long way off.” Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, will therefore replace the head of the Kremlin. “A participation of Vladimir Poutine by videoconference is not for the moment completely excluded”, specifies however the reporter.
