In a Free Opinion text entitled “Éric Duhaime, the dark blue sheep” (The duty, September 24 and 25, 2022), Patrice Roy, senior programmer-analyst, says he sees favorably the rise of the Conservative Party of Quebec in the Quebec political sphere; a breath of fresh air, according to him, in the face of an alleged homogenizing influence of the left-wing party Québec solidaire on our political culture.
However, although we can rejoice in the fact that right-wing orphans in Quebec now enjoy, thanks to Éric Duhaime, greater visibility and greater political representation, the fact remains that the breakthrough of “socialism” in Quebec has in fact taken root for reasons very similar to those evoked with regard to the PCQ, namely that, in the recent past, in the elections of November 1998, Quebec politics was monopolized by three leaders from the right: Lucien Bouchard, Jean Charest and Mario Dumont having then crossed swords there.
Thus, whether on the right or the left, politics, like nature, abhorring a vacuum, it was essential that the progressive forces in Quebec, today embodied by Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois and QS, are gaining ground so that we can counteract a biased globalization resulting from free trade agreements primarily focused on maximizing competitiveness and profits.
This is why it is important today to reorient relations between peoples in order to promote consultation, without which we cannot meet the many planetary challenges, such as climate change, which transcend borders and force us to adapt and tighten elbows more than ever.
