When the “people” engage in the presidential election

In 2017, the actress from Epinal, Valérie Donzelli, helped the socialist candidate Benoît Hamon, and Geneviève de Fontenay, from Longwy, signed for Emmanuel Macron. Geneviève also says that she has kept Manu’s 06 and that she sends him messages to comment on his policy. Eternal mother of the Misses, she has always been committed. 20 years ago, on February 12, 2002, she announced her support for Arlette Laguillier. But we can go back even further: 1974, the actor Louis de Funès appears in a meeting of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, Brigitte Bardot also supports Giscard and poses in a T-shirt so tight that her magnificent chest distorts the slogan inscribed on the “Giscard at the helm” jersey. Further still, Jacques Brel supports and sings in a meeting of Pierre Mendès-France in 1967 (for a legislative election in Grenoble).

1981 represents a pivotal election in this register of star support committees. And it is a Lorrain, Jack Lang, born in Mirecourt, who revolutionizes the genre. Lang was not well known at the end of the 70s and the beginning of the 1980s, he was a university professor in Nancy, he was in the shadow of Mitterrand. In a way, it will industrialize the support committee. He sets up an army of stars for François Mitterrand, a band of heavyweights: Barbara, Dalida, Michel Piccoli, Gérard Depardieu, Charles Trénet… Seven years later, François Mitterrand is again a candidate and this second candidacy of Mitterrand in 1988 will be organized on a new masterstroke by Jack Lang, with the complicity of the publicist Jacques Séguéla. They ask the “people” to call on François Mitterrand to be a candidate, through a press campaign. All this is obviously super organized, there is not much spontaneous, Mitterrand, in fact, has been preparing since 1987. Here too, weighty supporters are displayed: France Gall, Claude Brasseur, Isabelle Huppert, Dominique Rocheteau and the singer Renaud who will launch on this occasion a slogan that has become legendary: “Tonton, let not be concrete”.
