Often faced with emergency situations, caregivers can now learn to manage their stress thanks to a doctor from Toulouse (Haute-Garonne) who offers unprecedented training: piloting an airplane in a simulator.
At the controls of an A320, three trainees who have no pilot training. And yet, they will have to manage a flight of about twenty minutes in this stimulator. An experience far removed from their everyday life. Prepare the rooms, help with taking medication, check with the nurse on the state of health of the patients. Paul is a nursing assistant at the Oncopole of Toulouse (Haute-Garonne). His days are full. “What can generate a little tension is when we have several patients calling us at the same time and we have to prioritize our care.“, he explains.
Bad decision making
Doing the right thing at the right time is exactly what a pilot must do when faced with an emergency situation. Faced with several orders, the apprentice pilots are flabbergasted. “This can lead to loss of information, therefore poor decision-making”, summarizes the instructor, Dr. Régis Fuzier, anesthesiologist and airplane pilot. At the end of the flight, the trainees can breathe, convinced that they will be able to put this experience to good use on a daily basis.
