A heat wave settles in France, Monday, July 11, for ten days. How is the phenomenon explained?
The Southwest was overheated on Monday July 11: 31 degrees in Limoges and Montpellier (Hérault), and up to 35 degrees in Pau (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) or Toulouse (Haute-Garonne). Temperatures will continue to rise everywhere in France until Wednesday, due to a heat dome, closely scrutinized by Météo France. “Second phase, between Thursday and Friday, a break in the very hot weather in the northern regions”explains François Jobard, forecaster for Météo France.
Experts predict a new peak of heat the following weekend. Off Portugal, a cold air mass, isolated in the middle of warm air masses, rotates counter-clockwise, acting as a heat pump over France. The Great West and the Center could be affected by temperatures of up to 40 or even 42 degrees. Agriculture is among the most exposed sectors, while the soils are already very dry.
