The rise in the index point which determines the salaries of civil servants, which has been virtually frozen since 2010, is expected for the summer. The government had promised this upgrade. How big will it be?
The index point for civil servants, the basic value of their salary, has been frozen for five years. The government has promised to increase it. For many, there is urgency. “It hasn’t moved for a very long time. And our purchasing power, there, frankly, is very, very, very hard”, confides an official. Public service unions are demanding an increase of 4 to 10%.
According to the UNSA, many positions are losing their attractiveness. “Just look today at the results of the various competitions that are taking place at the moment. We realize that there are not enough candidates”, explains Luc Farré, Secretary General of the UNSA Civil Service. This increase will have a cost for public finances: 2 billion euros for 1% of an index point. For 4%, the bill will therefore rise to 8 billion. The measure should be presented by the government to Parliament just after the legislative elections, for a possible entry into force during the summer.
