New Prime Minister Michel Barnier said he was open to discussion on a hot topic: pension reform. The left wants to repeal it, as does the National Rally. He says he wants to make “improvements” for the most vulnerable.
This promises to be complex. The new Prime Minister Michel Barnier wants to review the delicate issue of pension reform. “We are not going to call everything into question, this law was passed in very difficult conditions (…) In any case, I am going to open the debate on improving this law for the most vulnerable people”he declared on the TF1 set, Friday, September 6. Very reserved reception from some unions. Several are calling for a demonstration on October 1 against retirement at 64.
The National Rally also remains opposed to retirement at 64, it is waiting for details on the axes of the possible revision. The pension reform was adopted with difficulty in March 2023 thanks to the 49-3 pronounced by Élisabeth Borne. In the presidential camp, we say we are ready for changes while setting limits. “We must maintain a financial balance to ensure pensions for our retirees”explained Sylvain Maillard, Renaissance MP. Michel Barnier also said he was open to progress on taxation.
