For many French workers, the pension reform is struggling to pass. Some hope to save so they can stop working before the new legal retirement age.
The employees of a Parisian hairdressing salon have prepared to work longer, after the promulgation of the law reforming pensions. But for a 40-year-old hairstylist, it’s hard to imagine herself in the same place 24 years from now. “I have a problem with my heels, it hurts my feet. I’m on my feet all the time, I also have a problem with my spine”, she confides, Saturday, April 15. For his client who works in finance, the pill is hard to pass. “I don’t see myself working until I’m 64. I hope to save to stop before”she says.
Departure age gradually pushed back
From September 1, 2023, the legal retirement age will be gradually increased by three months per year. A 77-year-old former hairdresser now sells soaps because her retirement pension of 800 euros is too low. “It allows me to put butter in the spinach”, she explains. A mother with a choppy career, she is not eligible for the minimum pension of 1,200 euros. She has no choice but to continue working.
