What will be the new Olympic disciplines at the Paris 2024 Olympics?
Since 2014, the Olympic Committee has encouraged each host country to offer new sports and new events within the Olympic program of their edition.
It is in this context that the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will welcome four new sports disciplines, also called “additional sports”: sport climbing, skateboarding, breaking (otherwise known as breakdance) and surfing! Four sports in tune with their times, new leisure activities and modes of travel.
Of these four additional disciplines, three of them (surfing, rock climbing and skateboarding) were already included in the Tokyo 2020 Games program. Anxious to appeal to a young audience, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games renewed these disciplines. Added to these three disciplines is also breaking, a style of acrobatic dance that emerged in the Bronx neighborhoods in the 1970s. A first at the Olympics.
Where will these new disciplines take place?
Breaking and skateboarding will be organized at the temporary site at Place de la Concorde, climbing at a new climbing site at Le Bourget and surfing at Teahupo’o in Tahiti.
Also new challenges…
But that’s not all: eight new events will make their debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics! Here they are :
• A mixed race in athletics: the 35km walk.
• A new weight category in women’s boxing
• A “skeet” event by mixed team, in shooting.
• Two extreme canoe slalom events
• Three mixed sailing events: kitesurfing, the “470” and ocean racing.
Did you know ? The Paris 2024 Olympics respect strict parity between male and female athletes. A total of 10,500 athletes are expected.
