There are nearly 7,500 nursing homes in France which accommodate a total of 600,000 residents. Depending on the private and public establishments, the supervising staff or the rates for a room are not the same.

According to the latest data provided by INSEE and the statistics department concerning accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people, there are currently 7,500 nursing homes on French territory. They accommodate a total of 600,000 residents. 50% of nursing homes are public, 30% of which depend directly on local authorities and 20% are attached to a public hospital. As for the private sector, 30% of nursing homes are non-profit establishments managed by associations and 20% are for-profit.

There is a framework that includes, on the one hand, those who are in permanent contact with the residents: nurses, orderlies and other caregivers, and on the other, management, administration, doctors and general services. In private for-profit nursing homes, there are 53 supervisors including 25 caregivers to take care of 100 residents. In those non-profit, there are 63 supervisors including 24 caregivers. Public nursing homes have more staff: public hospitals have an average of 68 supervisors, including 30 caregivers. For public nursing homes managed by local authorities, 70 supervisors including 25 caregivers are present for 100 residents. On average, a room in a public Ehpad costs 1,800 euros per month. In the private sector, residents must pay between 2,500 and 3,000 euros each month.
