Weekend Plans | Fun Things to Do

Method Man and Redman in Montreal, visit to Château Dufresne, Village au Pied-du-Courant… Everything to have fun to the max. Here are our journalists’ suggestions.

Method Man and Redman in Montreal

Best buddies Method Man and Redman are back in Montreal, to the great delight of heavy rap fans. Respectively members of the Wu-Tang Clan and Def Squad, the two MCs have a reputation – which we can confirm – for giving a show that is as wild as it is smoky. They alone have the recipe for a catchy boom-bap on which they recount as much the stories of a dangerous past as pleasant memories of a partying experience. Also actors, the two artists have a captivating stage presence. They will be preceded by Junk & Hungry and Kong.

At the Olympia, 7 p.m.

The Village at the Foot of the Current

A favorite summer spot for Montrealers, Village au Pied-du-Courant is once again offering a festive musical program to discover with your feet in the sand. This Saturday, the rhythms of Colombia will be in the spotlight when the Latin collective Frikiton celebrates the country’s independence day. It will be an opportunity to dance, but also to admire the fireworks show of the International des Feux Loto-Québec, since the site offers a breathtaking view of Île Sainte-Hélène. All summer long, from Thursday to Saturday evening, Village au Pied-du-Courant welcomes vacationers – whether they are actually on vacation or not. Admission is free before 7 p.m.

Vietnamese market (at night) at the Peel basin

PHOTO SIMON GRENIER-MARCIL, PROVIDED BY CHỢ ĐÊM MTL

The Chợ Đêm MTL festival takes place at the Peel Basin, along the Lachine Canal, in Griffintown.

The Chợ Đêm MTL festival returns for a second edition at the Peel Basin. The friendly event celebrates Vietnamese culinary and cultural wealth all weekend long. We visit this market day and night, to taste one of the dishes offered by the forty or so restaurants and vendors on site. The choice is difficult between the different Vietnamese specialties and creations: bánh bột chiên (fried rice flour cakes), chạo tôm (shrimp paste wrapped in sugar cane and grilled on the barbecue), bánh mì and many others. We extend the outing a little by attending one of the performances of guest artists. Singers, dancers, illusionists, musicians, and even Vietnamese martial arts practitioners will be there.

July 18 and 19, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and July 20 and 21, from noon to 10 p.m. Admission is $5 (or $4 online).
