Panthers win over Flyers

Carter Verhaeghe scored twice, Rudolfs Balcers and Josh Mahura each scored in the third period and the Florida Panthers held on to beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on Wednesday.

Balcers’ goal, his first for the Panthers after signing with the club in the offseason, gave his side the upper hand for good. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 31 shots for the Panthers, who have won three of their first four games of the campaign.

Travis Konency, James van Riemsdyk and Nick Seeler hit the target for the Flyers. Kevin Hayes had two assists.

Felix Sandstrom made 31 saves for the Flyers.

The Panthers were playing their first game without star defenseman Aaron Ekblad, who was placed on long-term injured reserve earlier Wednesday. The Panthers were also without one of their best defensemen in Brandon Montour, who hasn’t played in the last two games.

Neal Pionk scored his second goal of the game 31 seconds into overtime as the Winnipeg Jets edged the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 on Wednesday.

Pionk’s slap shot left goaltender Alexandar Georgiev petrified and earned him his first career overtime goal.

Sam Gagner and Cole Perfetti also shone the red light for the Jets, who will complete a two-game, two-night series with a stop in Vegas on Thursday to face the Golden Knights.

Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves in front of the Jets net.

Leading 3-1 in the second period, the Jets saw Mikko Rantanen and Valeri Nichushkin score 2:01 apart to tie the game. Rantanen led Colorado’s comeback with two goals and an assist in the second period.

Georgiev stopped 24 shots.

Nichushkin has hit the mark in all four of the Avalanche’s games this season. Rantanen’s two-goal night took his career tally to 168. It is now the 10e goalscorer in team history.
