“We prohibit nothing, no taboo”confirms the Ministry of the Interior to the political service of France Inter on Monday October 14, the day after the announcement by the government spokesperson of a new immigration law from the beginning of 2025, after that voted in 2023 at the end of a debate which had torn the presidential majority apart.
The entourage of the minister, Bruno Retailleau, confirms the desire to toughen the text and put back on the table the right-wing measures rejected by the Constitutional Council last January. Among these measures: restrictions on family reunification, the return of the crime of illegal residence, or even national preference for certain social assistance. In addition to wanting to extend the duration of detention from 90 to 210 days in detention centers for illegal aliens deemed dangerous.
But this return of a more severe immigration law is already dividing the new central bloc. “A real bullshit”, blurted out a centrist deputy to the franceinfo political service. One of his colleagues talks about “provocation on the part of Bruno Retailleau”. Last year, the immigration law deeply divided the Macronist camp. 59 deputies did not vote for it (27 against, 32 abstentions). The Minister of Health, Aurélien Rousseau, even slammed the door of the government. But Bruno Retailleau is making another bet this time, that of opinion. It will be very complicated for the Macronists to vote against, his entourage said.
