Mélanie Thierry and Gilles Lellouche in "Suddenly alone" by Thomas Bidegain (2023) (LIJA JONS TRESOR FILMS)

Thomas Bidegain directs Gilles Lellouche and Mélanie Thierry in a survival (survival film), Suddenly alone, which comes out Wednesday December 6. They form a loving couple, who set off alone on a world tour, until an accident threatens their lives, their relationship, and their destiny in a physical and emotional test of life.

Weather of hearts

In love for five years, Ben and Laura cast off to sail solo around the world, alone, just the two of them. Approaching the southeastern coast of the American continent, Ben takes a detour to land on a remote island off the coast of Antarctica. During their exploration, a violent storm breaks out which destroys their ship anchored offshore. Without means of communication, thousands of kilometers from any human presence, Ben and Laura will have to cling to each other to survive.

After a tragedy (The Cowboys) and a comedy (Selfis), Passing by The Legends Office, Thomas Bidegain makes a film where extremes gauge emotions. Isolation, wild and rigorous nature, rugged terrain, will test feelings. Putting us right into the bath of the fabulous solo cruise that Ben and Laura take, the writer-director sets the love between them very high. This is the height of the challenge they have set for themselves: to remain alone in the world to travel around it on a nutshell. This would be without taking into account the marine weather which will affect that of the hearts.

Spectacular allegory

The sea, an island, an actress, an actor: Thomas Bidegain doesn’t need much more to take us on an adventure that is as human as it is sentimental. Although they tour side by side, Gilles Lellouche and Mélanie Thierry had never played together. It’s a good idea to bring them together Soudain alone in a film where we didn’t expect them, and which speaks of the couple in a spectacular allegory, also astonishing. If the feelings that unite, disunite, and reunite these “voluntary castaways” are at the heart of the film, Thomas Bidegain films them in a geography of ice swept by the winds of haunting beauty.

The meaning blends with the form over the course of a story which renews itself over its almost two hours, while others would have long abandoned Story of adventure and love, Suddenly alone worth for its qualities of writing, direction and interpretation: good alchemy.
