On the occasion of the international day against violence against women, the President of the Republic welcomed on Saturday the actions already taken to combat this scourge which “is not inevitable”.

There “persistence of violence against women is not inevitable”, “we have to put an end to it and we are going to do it”promises Saturday November 25 in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, on the occasion of the international day against violence against women. “Every day, women suffer oppression, abuse, control. Every day, blows are given and lives are destroyed,” declares the head of state.

While the decree implementing the law establishing emergency financial assistance for victims of domestic violence, voted in February in Parliament, appeared in the Official Journal on Saturday, Emmanuel Macron listed the measures already in force: extension of working hours of 39 19, establishment of a digital support platform, facilitation of filing a complaint, increase in the number of dedicated investigators, deployment of “serious danger phones” and of “immediate danger bracelets”creation of emergency accommodation places.
118 feminicides in 2022
These actions have, according to him, “beared fruit”: “244,000 victims of domestic violence were recorded this year by the security forces. This is twice as many as in 2017. And these figures of course reflect the freer expression of the words of women.”
“This is a good thing, but the fact remains that 118 women died at the hands of their spouse in 2022.”

The next weeks “will mark the achievement of important commitments”he underlines: deployment of the domestic violence prevention file in January, which will enable field actors, law enforcement and judicial actors “to improve the knowledge and monitoring of perpetrators of domestic violence and the consideration of weak signals” ; creation of specialized centers in all judicial courts from January 1; emergency financial aid paid for victims from December 1.
“We must continue to move forward, to be more demanding, to be more protective, to prevent better. That’s it, we continue and we will not give up.”, concludes the president. According to the #NousToutes collective, there are currently 121 feminicides for the year 2023.
