“We have heads of state who are incapable of ecological transition”, denounces MEP Karima Delli

“We have heads of state who are incapable of ecological transition”, denounces the MEP EELV Karima Delli, Thursday November 11 on franceinfo, while the COP 26 officially ends this Friday. After more than ten days of negotiations, the climate conference is entering its home stretch in Glasgow.

franceinfo: Is this COP26 a new failure?

Karima Delli: Summits follow one another, IPCC reports sound the alarm and we have heads of state who are incapable of ecological transition. This is the drama. And now, instead of making the turn right away, we’re going to be up against the wall. 1.5 additional degrees was planned for 2100. There, the latest IPCC report says that we will exceed them between 2030 and 2035. The ecological transition is good for the climate, it’s good for the employment is good for good living. We will have to change the heads of state and put in much greener heads of state. The first victims of global warming will be the poorest and most vulnerable.

What would be the criteria for a successful COP?

First, binding actions. Today, there is nothing binding. I want binding targets with binding roadmaps. Let’s stop investing in fossil fuels. We are really the very, very poor students of COP 26.

“We had a president who strutted through the corridors of the COP with big speeches when we should sweep in front of our door.”

I remind you that France was condemned for climate inaction. We have a president who is absolutely not green.

The European Union is preparing to adopt sanctions against Belarus accused of organizing an influx of migrants to the borders of Europe, on the border with Poland. Is it the solution to sanction President Lukashenko?

Absoutely. Europe cannot be manipulated by a small dictator who tries to weaken European solidarity by abusing children, women, vulnerable people who must be protected.

Clément Beaune, Secretary of State for European Affairs, qualifies the situation as a migratory attack and believes that it is a test for Europe. Do you agree ?

It’s a test for Europe, it’s true. Faced with this problem, we absolutely must show European unity. But for years, European migration policy has been nothing more or less akin to a vast game of massacre. Look at what is happening in the Mediterranean, Europe must have a real answer to the migration question. Europe must demand respect for the Geneva Convention and absolutely respect these humans. We must ensure that European law and fundamental rights including the right to asylum must be respected by all Member States. Lukashenko would like this refugee issue to be resolved through security measures. It’s a trap. The best response Europe can send back is to treat children, women and men with humanity. European solidarity is the best response.
