Important negotiations are being held Wednesday, November 4 between France and the United Kingdom on the subject of fishing licenses. Jean-Pierre Sagot, fisherman at Le Tréport, shares his concerns on the 13 Hours plateau.
“France must take care of its fishermen”. Jean-Pierre Sagot is a fisherman, like his father and grandfather were before him. On the set of the 13 Hours, he shares his concern as negotiations are underway Thursday, November 4 between France and the United Kingdom concerning post-Brexit fishing licenses. Without a license, Jean-Pierre Sagot can no longer fish in English waters, with a 30% shortfall.
“These are the most important months for fishing”, advises the fisherman to journalist Julian Bugier. “We fear for the survival of our company and for the generations to come”, he said, adding that his son also works in fishing. “We need fishermen on the coast and it is time for France to slap its fist on the table a bit”, says Jean-Pierre Sagot. For the fisherman, retaliatory measures should be considered by France if no agreement is found with the United Kingdom: “if there is no improvement, I think it will be necessary”, he believes.
