“We are going to write a sports page in Périgord”

Paul Maso confides: he did not sleep well on the eve of this historic match in the Dordogne, the quarter-final of the Coupe de France between Bergerac and Versailles. A first for Périgord, which even saw the two historically opposed cities, Périgueux and Bergerac, unite to organize this match at the Francis Rongiéras stadium. “This is an opportunity for the Périgords and our department to experience a historic situation, assures the current departmental councilor and deputy to the town hall of Périgueux, in charge of sport. I know that we are going to write a sport page in Périgord which may not see each other again soon.” Paul Maso was the guest of France Bleu Périgord 6-9 this Wednesday.

Footballers will be able to merge with the population. Memories will live forever

The former coach and former sports director of Bergerac Perigord Football Club knows that these moments have a special flavor. “We dream of moments like that, the Coupe de France is the only moment in football where we will be able to highlight a territory, a city, continues Paul Maso. Footballers will be able to merge with the population. Memories will live on forever.”

The BPFC, a club that works well but integrating the professional world remains “still complicated”

Current leader of his National 2 group, Bergerac is aiming for the French Cup but also the championship. The BPFC can rely on “the stability of its governance” according to the departmental adviser. But the former sports director of the club does not see how a Périgord club could settle in the professional world for a long time: “You have to remain lucid, we are in a small town, beyond the national 2, the means to play football must be substantial, I don’t know if in this city, this region, we have the means to go into the professional world. We can’t have Mbappé at Bergerac!”, he smiled.
