Warren Goss was one of the first American soldiers to land on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the veteran looks back on this date which marked history and his life.
The return of a hero who poses with children and is interviewed. At 99 years old, Warren Goss is one of the last veterans of D-Day. He recounts his June 6, 1944. That day, he experienced the hell of the Landings: “At the time, I didn’t realize it was important, when I joined, I was a kid, I had never left my family,” he confides. On Utah Beach, in Normandy, he was part of the first wave of soldiers to disembark.
“When the door opened, the two guys in front of me were killed immediately, they didn’t even have time to get down”remembers Warren Goss. “In the water, I lowered myself (…) it took me a while to get to the beach”explains the veteran, who remembers a “guy right in front of (him)” to the “tattered leg” who was crawling on the sand. “I could not do anything”he declares. “During training we were told ‘never stop, if there is a friend on the ground, you jump over them and run’. says the nonagenarian.
