Only the huge land of the Azovstal steelworks, in the heart of the city, remains defended by Ukrainian fighters. Instead of ordering an assault, Vladimir Putin ordered that this territory be subjected to a very hermetic blockade.
It is estimated that a thousand civilians are trapped in this enclave defended by an unknown number of Ukrainian defenders. The city, overlooking the Sea of Azov, is surrounded on all sides by Russian forces.
In the west, the Primorsky district, located near the airport, is now under the control of the invader. According to the Mariupol authorities still on the spot, around 100,000 inhabitants are still in the city which was home to 400,000 people just two months ago.
